Unable to delete VM/Host Rules with error "A specified parameter was not correct: VM Group Missing"

Issue/Introduction

  • Deleting VM/Host Rules fails with error message: 'A specified parameter was not correct: VM Group Missing'
  • vSphere HA and DRS reconfiguration task may also fail with the above error message.
  • Error message as seen in the vCenter UI:

Cause

  • This issue is encountered when a VM/Host group no longer exists but there are Rules present that are associated to the non-existing VM/Host Group.
  • The issue can also occur if a VM part of a Rule no longer exists in the same cluster.
  • In both scenarios, the Rules are considered stale entries and cannot be deleted from the vSphere Client.
