Issue/Introduction

Symptoms

Users attempting to upgrade from Aria Operations 8.18.7 to VCF Operations versions 9.0.x or 9.1.0.x may experience cluster failures during the update process.

This is primarily caused by a known Photon OS conflict between the source and target versions.

Environment

  • Source Version: VMware Aria Operations 8.18.7

  • Target Version: VCF Operations 9.0.x, 9.1.0.x, 9.1.1.x

  • Infrastructure: vSphere 8.0 Update 3k (VVF) or higher

Resolution

To ensure a successful transition from Aria Operations 8.18.7, you must upgrade directly to VCF Operations 9.1.1.x or later. The 9.1.1.x release specifically restores the upgrade path and resolves the Photon OS underlying conflict.

Upgrade Steps

  1. Baseline Validation: Ensure your current environment is at Aria Operations 8.18.7.
  2. Snapshot: Take an offline snapshot of your Aria Operations cluster nodes before initiating the update.
  3. Target Selection: Download the VCF Operations 9.1.1.x upgrade .pak file.
    • Warning: Do not attempt to upgrade to 9.0.x or 9.1.0.x from version 8.18.7.
  4. License Server: Deploy the new VCF License Server appliance included with the 9.x release to ensure VVF/VCF licenses are correctly recognized.
  5. Sequential Upgrade:
    • Upgrade ria Operations to VCF Operations 9.1.x first.
    • Upgrade vCenter Server to 9.x (VCF Operations 9.1.1.x is compatible with vCenter 8.0U3k during the transition).
    • Upgrade ESXi hosts last.
