Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to prepare ESXi hosts for NSX within a cluster managed by vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM), the installation process fails or stalls
  • ESXi transport node preparation is stuck at 23% as in the below screenshot

Environment

VMware NSX

Resolution

Prerequisites:

  • Ensure you have administrative access to both vCenter Server and NSX Manager.
  • Verify the cluster is enabled for vLCM.

Procedure:

  1. Maintenance Mode: Place the affected ESXi host into Maintenance Mode.
  2. Isolate Host: Move the host out of the vLCM-enabled cluster to the Datacenter level in the vSphere inventory.
  3. Cleanup Stale Registration:
    • Log in to the NSX Manager UI.
    • Navigate to System > Fabric > Hosts > Other Nodes.
    • Locate the host and perform a Force Delete to clear stale registration data.
  4. Reboot Host: Perform a physical or soft reboot of the ESXi host to ensure a clean state.
  5. Re-add to Cluster: Move the host back into the vLCM-managed cluster.
  6. Validate: Confirm the ESXi transport node preparation completes successfully.
