Issue/Introduction

  • Edge nodes status shows as Degraded.
  • Edge tunnels down alarm and Edge Datapath CPU high usage alarm are seen for the NSX Edge Node.
  • Current CPU usage on the Edge node can be obtained by invoking the 'get dataplane cpu stats' Edge CLI which shows packets per second per CPU core and the CPU utilization.
  • Executing the 'get dataplane cpu stats' admin CLI command on the Edge Node results in the following error message:

% An unexpected error occurred: The dataplane service is in error state, has failed or is disabled

Environment

VMware NSX

Resolution

To resolve the issue follow the below steps. The below commands should be executed from Edge's admin CLI.

1. Run the following command on the affected Edge Node to restart the dataplane service:

Note: This command will cause momentary disruption in traffic.

EDGE> restart service dataplane

2. After the service restarts, verify that the dataplane is operational by executing:

EDGE> get service dataplane

Ensure the command returns valid output without errors. An expected output under an ideal working scenario should show the service state as "running" as highlighted below.

EDGE> get service dataplane
Tue Oct 21 2025 UTC 06:50:45.196
Service name:      dataplane
Service state:     running
