This FAQ provides answers to commonly asked questions about BCIS (Intelligence Services) licensing expiration behavior for Edge SWG (ProxySG).

What happens when a BCIS license expires?

  • Edge SWG (ProxySG) will be unable to download BCIS database updates.
  • Edge SWG (ProxySG) will continue to use the existing databases until the content expiry dates. The content expiry dates are specified under the download status pages as Data Valid Until.

  • "Data Valid Until" is 90 days since last successful database download
  • Dynamic requests through Web Pulse are no longer available.

Will Edge SWG (ProxySG) stop processing internet traffic after the BCIS expiry date?

  • Edge SWG (ProxySG) will continue to process traffic using query results from the existing static databases.

Will the BCIS database be retained after a proxy restart and license expiry date?

  • Existing databases are not wiped from the appliance unless you perform a factory reset.
  • If you factory reset before renewing the BCIS license, the existing databases will be cleared and Edge SWG (ProxySG) will not be able to download them again.

Will there be any errors due to this license expiry?

  • The Edge SWG (ProxySG) health monitoring will report the CRITICAL state for licensing and communication status for any BCIS components that are enabled.

Will the expiration cause any issues with processing traffic with existing policy rules configured?

  • Transactions will continue to be processed through the policy engine based on the responses from the current static databases.
  • Transactions will not match rules based on BCIS policy conditions once the database content expires past the Data Valid Until date. Websites will be categorized as 'None'.
    Examples:
    • Traffic that is usually allowed may be denied.
    • Traffic that is usually denied may be allowed.
    • Rules that enable particular feature functionality may no longer match.

How to renew a BCIS license and update the license on the Edge SWG (ProxySG)?

  • For some Edge SWG (ProxySG) appliance models, BCIS can be purchased as an add-on and then linked to your base license.
  • For newer Enterprise Edge SWG (ProxySG) models, the license is included as a default subscription service.
