Issue/Introduction

 This KB article is a quick reference for various upgrade scenarios for the Symantec VIP Gateway. Refer to the latest upgrade guide for more details. For your convenience, several upgrade guides are attached. 

Environment

VIP Enterprise Gateway

OS: Windows/Linux

Resolution

  • Use LiveUpdate whenever possible (LiveUpadate Troubleshooter)
  • Running different versions of VIP Enterprise Gateway is supported.  
  • Always take a backup of the current settings using the export feature. (export instructions). 
  • VIP EG 9.10.x supports imported data from 9.8.4 or later only.

UPGRADING TO VIP ENTERPRISE GATEWAY 9.10.2:

CURRENT VERSION LIVEUPDATE SUPPORTED? MANUAL UPGRADE OPTION
9.1 through 9.6 No - Manual upgrade not supported.
- Export settings from the current VIP EG console.
- Uninstall VIP EG and install fresh VIP EG 9.9.2 on a supported operating system, then import settings.
- LiveUpdate or manual update to 9.10
9.7.x Yes - If the operating system is supported by 9.10, upgrade to 9.8.0, then 9.8.4, and then 9.10. (upgrade files and guides available from VIP Manager.)
- If the operating system is not supported, upgrade to VIP EG 9.9.2, export current settings, install fresh VIP EG 9.10 on a supported operating system, then import settings. LiveUpdate or manual update to 9.10
9.8.0, 9.8.1, 9.8.2, 9.8.3 Yes - If the operating system is supported, upgrade to 9.8.4, and then upgrade to VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.10.
- If the operating system is not supported, upgrade to VIP EG 9.9.2, export current settings, install VIP EG 9.10 on a supported operating system, then import settings. LiveUpdate or manual update to 9.10
9.9.0, 9.9.1, 9.9.2 Yes - If the operating system is supported, upgrade to 9.10
- If the operating system is not supported, export current settings, install VIP EG 9.10 on a supported operating system, then import settings. LiveUpdate or manual update to 9.10
9.10.0, 9.10.1 Yes - Windows Server 2016 or Linux 7.9 minimum OS required. 
- Export current settings, then install the VIP EG 9.10.1 upgrade. Or, install the VIP EG 9.10.2 upgrade.

 

INSTRUCTION TO UPGRADE TO VIP ENTERPRISE GATEWAY 9.9.2 ONLY (skip if upgrading to 9.10 or later):

If you are running VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.9.1: Apply this patch, then use LiveUpdate or manually upgrade to VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.9.2. Your existing configuration settings are migrated during the upgrade. 

If you are running VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.9.0: Use LiveUpdate* or manually upgrade to upgrade to VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.9.1. Your existing configuration settings are migrated during the upgrade. 

If you are running VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.8.0 or 9.8.4: Use LiveUpdate* or manually upgrade to VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.9.1. Your existing configuration settings are migrated during the upgrade. 

If you are running VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.8.1, 9.8.2, or 9.8.3: Upgrade to VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.8.4 via LiveUpdate or manually by using one of the upgrade packages available in VIP Manager (Account > Download Files > Enterprise_Gateway), then upgrade to the latest available VIP Enterprise Gateway.

If you are running VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.1 through 9.7: Use the Export Settings feature to export the configuration settings from the existing VIP Enterprise Gateway. Then, install a new instance of VIP Enterprise Gateway 9.9.0 on a supported operating system, and use the Import Settings feature to import your configuration settings. (See the Symantec VIP Installation and Configuration Guide)

Using the export\import feature: SSL and VIP certificates are not included in exported data and must be installed manually on a fresh VIP Enterprise Gateway install prior to importing VIP EG data.

Here are some tips to follow:

  1. Check the current version of VIP Enterprise Gateway installed on your system, and then verify the compatibility of the newer version you want to upgrade to.
  2. Review the release notes for the newer version to identify any known issues, installation instructions, or upgrade prerequisites.
  3. Schedule a maintenance window for each upgrade, ensuring that it does not conflict with other maintenance or scheduled events.
  4. Take a backup of the system and verify that the backup is successful before starting the upgrade.
  5. Follow the installation or upgrade instructions for the new version, ensuring that all the steps are completed successfully.
  6. Test the new version after each upgrade, to ensure that it is working as expected and there are no issues.
  7. If any issues are found, troubleshoot them and open a case for support portal https://ca-broadcomcsm.wolkenservicedesk.com/wolken/esd/create_request 
  8. Once the upgrade is complete, document the changes made and verify that the new version is fully functional.

By following these steps, you should be able to upgrade VIP Enterprise Gateway while minimizing the risk of any issues or downtime.
