Issue/Introduction

You can use several methods to uninstall the Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) product components, such as through the Windows Control Panel. If these common methods fail, you can download and use the Symantec CleanWipe removal tool using the instructions below.

WARNING:

• Broadcom Support does not recommend using CleanWipe the first time you have uninstallation trouble. You should only use CleanWipe as a last resort when the usual uninstallation methods are unsuccessful.
• You should always use the latest version of the CleanWipe removal tool to uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection. While CleanWipe can remove older installations of Symantec Endpoint Protection, you should not use an older version of CleanWipe to remove a newer version, as this action can have unexpected results.
• CleanWipe only removes Symantec software, such as Symantec Endpoint Protection. To remove NortonLifeLock software, see Download and run the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool.

Notes:

• CleanWipe does not support command line use; you must manually run CleanWipe.
• As of SEP 14, you can incorporate CleanWipe functionality directly into the Symantec Endpoint Protection client package. You can enable this option with client installation settings. For more information, see About uninstalling the Symantec Endpoint Protection client.
• If you need help with CleanWipe, contact Broadcom Support directly.

Resolution

Download the CleanWipe removal tool

Download the nnnnnn_CleanWipe_version/build.zip file that is attached at the bottom this article.

Alternately, CleanWipe is included on the full installation file for Symantec Endpoint Protection, in the Tools folder. To download software:

1. See Download the latest version of Symantec software.
2. Download the full installation file for Symantec Endpoint Protection.
3. Double-click the installation file to extract its contents.
4. In the folder where you extracted the file, navigate to the following folder: \Tools\CleanWipe\
5. Copy CleanWipe.zip to a destination of your choice.

 

Uninstall Symantec Endpoint Protection using CleanWipe

1. Extract the contents of the .zip file that you downloaded for CleanWipe.
2. Copy the folder that contains Cleanwipe.exe to the computer on which you want to run it.
3. Double-click Cleanwipe.exe, and then click Next.
4. Accept the license agreement, and then click Next.
5. Select the Symantec products you want to remove, and then click Next twice.
6. When the tool finishes running, you may be prompted to restart the computer.
   After the computer restarts, CleanWipe reopens and continues to run.
7. Click Next.
8. Click Finish.

The Symantec products you selected are now uninstalled.
