Issue/Introduction

The official documentation states that Telemetry and Real-Time Metrics components are "Only captured as part of a scheduled backup." Therefore, if only manual backups are performed, these components will not be included in the backup. This article clarifies the exact restore behavior for both backup scenarios and provides the proper recovery procedures.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.1.x

Cause

In VCF 9.1, the backup behavior for Telemetry and Real-Time Metrics components (telemetry-acceptor, vcfms-metrics-store, and vcf-obs-data-platform) depends on the backup method:

  • Scheduled Backup: The components are internally included in the backup payload.

  • Manual Backup ("BACK UP NOW"): The components are excluded from the backup payload.

Resolution

Depending on the backup method used before the restore, follow the appropriate steps:

  • If restoring from a Scheduled Backup:
Telemetry and Real-Time Metrics can be successfully restored without reinstallation. Follow the official restore documentation.

  • If restoring from a Manual Backup ("BACK UP NOW"):
These components cannot be restored and will appear as "Unknown" in the VCF Operations UI. To clean up the stale records and manually reinstall them, follow the procedure described in KB458801.

Additional Information

Telemetry and Real-Time Metrics components appear as "Unknown" in VCF Operations after a full restore of VCF Management Services (458801)
