Issue/Introduction

Users may experience indefinite loading or "running" status when generating reports or accessing custom dashboards while logged in as a vCenter SSO admin (e.g., [email protected]). This behavior occurs because vCenter Server users have inherent limitations regarding report creation and scheduling in VMware Aria Operations. Use the following procedure to configure a local user with the necessary permissions to resolve this issue.

Symptoms:

  • Report generation status remains "Running" indefinitely.
  • Users are unable to see custom dashboards.
  • PDF report generation fails while JSON download works.

Environment

Aria Operations  8.18.x and later

Cause

vCenter Server users are not supported for creating or scheduling reports in VMware Aria Operations. This task requires a Local, LDAP, or SSO user with specific "Content" permissions.

Resolution

  1. Log in to VMware Aria Operations as an Administrator.
  2. Navigate to Administration > Control Panel > Access Control.
  3. Click the User Accounts tab and click Add.
  4. Select Local Users from the dropdown (this bypasses vCenter/Entra ID authentication).
  5. Enter a username and a strong password.
  6. Click Next.
  7. In the Assign Roles and Objects screen, click the plus (+) icon.
  8. From the Role dropdown, select PowerUser or Administrator.
  9. Ensure the checkbox "Assign this role to the user" is selected.
  10. Under the Select Objects section, change the dropdown to Object Hierarchies.
  11. Look for vCenter or Global Information.
  12. Select the World object (the top-level root) to provide access across all vCenter adapters.
  13. Check the box for "Allow access to all child objects". This ensures that new VMs or Hosts automatically inherit permission for reporting.
  14. Click Finish.
