Issue/Introduction

Service Manager Dialog may fail to display configured phrases on Windows servers. This issue often occurs when security software blocks the necessary named pipe communication between the Service Manager Dialog client and the Service Manager service.

Symptoms

  • Service Manager Dialog does not display phrases automatically on startup.
  • The issue occurs even when the service is running on the default port.
  • Named pipe communication is blocked by security software (e.g., Trend Micro).

Environment

  • Automic Automation Engine / Service Manager
  • Windows Server
  • Security software or Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions

Cause

Security software blocks named pipe communication (e.g., \\####\pipe\UC4.ServiceManager.#.#) between the Service Manager Dialog and the Service Manager service, preventing the dialog from enumerating the configured phrases.

Resolution

  1. Identify the security software blocking the communication on the server.
  2. Add exclusions for the following Service Manager binaries:
    • [ProgramFiles]\eclipse adoptium\jdk-17.0.16.8-hotspot\bin\java.exe
    • C:\Automic\Automic####\ServiceManager\bin\ucybsmgr.exe
    • C:\Automic\Automic####\ServiceManagerDialog\bin\ucybsmdi.exe
  3. Restart the Service Manager Dialog and verify that phrases populate correctly.
  4. If the issue persists, review the security software logs to identify further blocked paths or processes.
