Issue/Introduction

An administrator needs to migrate or relocate the backing storage (datastore) used by an existing VMware Content Library to a new datastore (e.g., due to storage migration, datastore decommissioning, or capacity expansion).

In vCenter Server versions prior to 9.x, there is no native option in the vSphere Client to modify the storage backing of an existing Content Library, and relocating the datastore via any alternative method is unsupported

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

Cause

The Content Library metadata is hardcoded to the original datastore UUID in the vCenter Database (VCDB).

Directly moving or migrating the library files to a new datastore at the storage level creates a UUID mismatch, rendering the library inaccessible and orphaned in the vCenter inventory.

Resolution

To relocate Content Library data to a new datastore in vCenter Server 7.x and 8.x, the existing Content Libraries must be deleted and recreated on the new destination datastore.

Phase 1: Preparation and Pre-checks

  1. Document Configuration: Record the configuration of your existing Content Libraries, including library names, publisher URLs, authentication passwords (if configured), and subscription topologies.

  2. Review Automation: Identify any automation (e.g., PowerCLI scripts, Terraform, or REST API calls) that references existing Content Library IDs. Deleting and recreating libraries generates completely new internal IDs.

  3. Network & Firewall Validation: Content Library synchronization requires proper network communication. Ensure there are no Firewall or Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) rules blocking traffic between the Publisher and Subscriber vCenters.

  4. Data Backup (Critical): If your Local (Publisher) Content Library contains unique VM Templates, OVF/OVA files, or ISO images that do not exist elsewhere, you must export them to a local workstation or an alternative storage location. Once the library is deleted from vCenter, the data on the backing datastore is permanently destroyed.

Phase 2: Removal of Existing Libraries

  1. Log in to the vSphere Client.

  2. Navigate to Menu > Content Libraries.

  3. Delete all existing Subscribed Content Libraries connected to the primary Publisher.

  4. Delete the existing Local (Publisher) Content Library.

Phase 3: Recreation and Synchronization

  1. Create a new Local Content Library on the new replacement datastore. Enable publishing during creation if it will serve as a Publisher.

  2. Import the backed-up content (VM Templates, OVF/OVA files, ISO images) into the new Local Content Library.

  3. Recreate the Subscribed Content Libraries, selecting the new backing datastores where applicable.

  4. Re-establish Subscriptions: Link the subscribers to the new Publisher Library using the new Subscription URL. Ensure that the vCenter Server certificates are still properly trusted across the environment, as establishing the publisher/subscriber relationship relies heavily on secure thumbprint validation.

  5. Staggered Synchronization: Initiate a synchronization on the Subscribed Libraries to pull the metadata/content from the Publisher. Note: If you have multiple subscribers (e.g., 5 Subscribed Libraries pulling from a single Publisher), consider staggering the initial sync (e.g., 2 to 3 at a time). This throttling prevents network and storage I/O resource contention on the Publisher's datastore.
