Issue/Introduction

After an HCX Bulk Migration fails due to an underlying issue, an attempt to cancel or "Force Cleanup" the migration task results in the following error: "Cannot cancel migration. Migration is in Initial Sync Failed state."

Environment

VMware HCX 4.x

Cause

This error occurs because the migration workflow has entered a "stale" or locked state following the initial failure. When the user attempts to trigger a cancellation or cleanup, the HCX Manager cannot reconcile the current "Initial Sync Failed" state with the cancellation request, resulting in the migration task becoming trapped in the user interface.

Resolution

Because the migration failed during the initial sync and did not progress further, the task can be safely removed by archiving the record.

  1. Log in to the HCX Manager UI.
  2. Navigate to the Migration tab.
  3. Locate the migration task that is stuck in the Initial Sync Failed state.
  4. Select the migration job and click Archive.
  5. Once the job is archived, the stale workflow state is cleared.
  6. You may now re-initiate the Bulk Migration for the affected virtual machine.

Additional Information

Important: This resolution applies only to migrations that failed during the initial sync phase where no data has been fully replicated.
