Issue/Introduction

  • HCX Interconnect (IX) appliance deployment may fail when a mismatch exists between the Network Profile requirements and the host-level network configuration. This issue often occurs in heterogeneous vSphere clusters where specific hosts lack the required port groups or uplink connectivity as the rest of the hosts in the cluster.
  • ESXi hosts using vSS and vSS among the cluster lack port Groups specified in the Compute and Network Profile of the HCX Manager

Environment

VMware HCX 4.x
VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)
vSphere Standard Switch (vSS) / Distributed Switch (vDS)

Cause

HCX automated host selection logic targets the Cluster or Resource Pool level. If the Network Profile references a port group that is not present on every host within the compute profile scope, the deployment will fail if the IX appliance is provisioned on a host lacking the required configuration.

Resolution

  1. Review the Compute Profile scope to identify if it encompasses hosts with inconsistent network configurations.
  2. Ensure the dvportgroup or standard port group exists on every ESXi host within the selected Cluster or Resource Pool.
  3. Validate that the HCX Network Profile maps to a port group reachable across all hosts in the scope.
  4. If heterogeneous network configurations cannot be resolved, create a dedicated Resource Pool containing only hosts with the required network configuration.
  5. Update the HCX Compute Profile to reference this specific Resource Pool instead of the entire cluster.
  6. Trigger the Service Mesh deployment again.
