Error: Failed to set the user password during VCF Workload Domain upgrade

Issue/Introduction

• This article addresses the error "Failed to set the user password" (ID: com.vmware.appliance.failed_set_usr_passwd) occurring during a VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Workload Domain upgrade.
  
  Update for appliance [FQDN] has failed. Failed to update vCenter password [FQDN] , status code 0, error: Failed to update [FQDN] due to error Failed to execute request PATCH [URL] with exception {"messages":[{"args":[],"default_message":"Failed to set the user [MASKED USER]","id":"com.vmware.appliance.failed_set_usr_passwd"}]}
  

Environment

• VCF 9.x
• vCenter Server 9.x

Cause

The vCenter root password stored in the SDDC Manager is out of sync with the actual vCenter root password, causing precheck or upgrade tasks to fail.

Resolution

1. Verify the root password using the vCenter VAMI (5480).
2. If the password is expired or locked, follow the steps in KB322247 to reset the root password.
3. Once the password is reset, sync it with the SDDC Manager.
4. Re-run the VCF workload domain upgrade precheck.
