NSX manager upgrade failure in SDDC Manager: waitForNsxtComponentUpgradeToComplete

Issue/Introduction

Upgrading NSX from the SDDC Manager fails with an error indicating an inability to complete the component upgrade. The upgrade status reports as PAUSING.

Symptoms:

  • NSX manager upgrade failed in waitForNsxtComponentUpgradeToComplete.
  • Overall upgrade status is :PAUSING.
  • componentUpgradeStatus for NSX Manager is: FAILED.
  • Logs may indicate issues with the Service account for NSX to VC communication.
  • Within the NSX Manager upgrade-coordinator logs, there is a line "UpgradeChangeNotificationCallbackResult{callbackId='CmInventoryUpgradeCallback', errorCode=CALLBACK_INVOCATION_CM_UNHEALTHY_STATE, status=FAILURE,"
    • This indicates an issue with the compute manager. 

Environment

  • NSX-T / NSX
  • VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF)
  • SDDC Manager

Cause

A stale or unresponsive vCenter/Compute Manager registration within the NSX Manager configuration is preventing the upgrade process from completing.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, remove the stale Compute Manager from the NSX Manager UI:

  1. Log into the NSX Manager UI.
  2. Click System in the top navigation bar.
  3. On the left-hand side, expand the Fabric drop-down menu.
  4. Click Compute Managers.
  5. Select the Compute Manager that is no longer active or is in a failed state.
  6. Click Delete.
  7. Once the Compute Manager is removed, retry the upgrade from the SDDC Manager.
