Issue/Introduction

An attempt to upgrade NSX directly from version 4.1.2 to version 9.1 fails during the pre-check phase.
The upgrade pre-check indicates version 4.1.2 is an unsupported starting version for a direct 9.1 upgrade.
Customers with high host counts or stateless environments may encounter roadblocks when attempting to bypass the multi-hop process.

Environment

VMware NSX 4.1.2
VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1

Cause

VMware Cloud Foundation does not support a direct, single-hop upgrade from NSX 4.1.x versions directly to VCF 9.1. This path has not been qualified. VCF lifecycle management requires version 4.2 as the minimum baseline for upgrading to 9.1.

Resolution

To upgrade from NSX 4.1.2 to NSX 9.1, execute a mandatory two-step upgrade process:

1. Upgrade NSX from version 4.1.2 to version 4.2.
2. Once the environment is stable on version 4.2, perform the upgrade to NSX 9.1.
