Issue/Introduction

VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) connectivity may fail during site pairing or reconfiguration due to stale network sockets in the dr-client service.

Symptoms:

  • Site pairing between protected and recovery sites is disrupted.
  • The Site Recovery Manager server instance shows as inaccessible.
  • Attempts to reconfigure the appliance fail with the following error: Error: Operation Failed - A general system error occurred: N7Vmacore15SystemExceptionE Failed to disabledr-client: The connection was closed by the remote end during handshake. (1)
  • VAMI or logs report: A general system error occurred: N7Vmacore3Ssl18SSLVerifyExceptionE SSL Exception: Verification parameters: PeerThumbprint: #### ExpectedThumbprint: ####

Environment

  • VMware Site Recovery Manager
  • VMware Live Site Recovery

Cause

The dr-client service on the SRM appliance enters a hung state and fails to drop stale network sockets during the Security Token Service (STS) handshake. A graceful OS reboot or service restart does not always clear these low-level socket locks in volatile memory.

Resolution

  1. Take an offline or consistent snapshot of the SRM appliance virtual machine (VM).
  2. Perform a clean guest shutdown of the SRM appliance.
  3. Completely Power Off the SRM appliance VM from the vSphere Client.
  4. Power On the SRM appliance VM to flush volatile memory and reset network interfaces.
  5. Reconfigure the SRM appliance to re-establish the site pair connection.
  6. Verify accessibility and monitor virtual machine synchronization states.
