Issue/Introduction

  • The same storage device displays inconsistent names when viewed across multiple ESXi hosts in a cluster
  • Device NAA ID is identical across hosts when queried via esxcli storage core device list.
  • The LUN ID for the device differs on each host.

Environment

VMware ESXi 7.x

VMware ESXi 8.x

Cause

This issue will arise if there is a LUN ID mismatch for the same datastore across the ESXi hosts within or across the cluster where the LUN is mounted.

Resolution

  1. Identify the specific LUN and NAA ID showing inconsistent naming.
  2. Engage the storage vendor to verify LUN mapping on the storage array.
  3. Ensure the LUN is mapped using the same LUN ID to all ESXi hosts where the datastore is presented.
