Issue/Introduction

In the Clarity Modern UX (Timeline view), users encounter usability challenges when attempting to create dependencies within projects containing a large number of tasks.

  • Drag-and-Drop Complexity: If the predecessor and successor tasks are not visible in the same view, users must drag lines across the timeline while scrolling, which is difficult for large projects.
  • External Dependency Pop-up: This tool is effective for cross-project links but does not allow for the selection of tasks within the same (source) project.
  • Task Details (Dependencies Tab): While this tab allows for managing existing dependencies, it lacks a "plus" (+) or "create" button to initiate new internal dependencies.
  • Successors Field: This field relies on the WBS (Row ID) rather than the Task ID (Task Code). Users must manually enter WBS IDs separated by commas

Environment

v16.4.1 and earlier

Resolution

There is currently no direct "search and link" lookup for successors within the internal project flyout.

Workarounds:

  • Successors Field: Manually enter the WBS ID of the target task into the "Successors" column in the Task list or Timeline view.
  • Sub-project Hierarchy: For very large projects, it is recommended breaking the project into sub-projects. This allows users to use the External Dependency feature, which includes a more robust search/lookup interface.

Users are encouraged to enhancement request to address any functionality gaps.
