Issue/Introduction

Inquiries may arise regarding whether VMware HCX OS Assisted Migration (OSAM) can be utilized to perform Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) migrations of bare-metal physical servers or migrate RHEV (Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization) workloads to vSphere.

Environment

VMware HCX
Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) migration

Cause

HCX OSAM is architecturally designed and validated exclusively for migrating non-vSphere virtual machines (specifically those running on KVM and Hyper-V hypervisors) to vSphere. It is not designed or validated for bare-metal physical servers or RHEV (Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization).

Resolution

  • Bare-Metal Servers: HCX OSAM is not officially supported for the migration of bare-metal physical servers.

Supported P2V ToolVMware vCenter Converter Standalone is the officially supported Broadcom tool for executing Physical-to-Virtual (P2V) migrations.
  • RHEV: RHEV (Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization) is not officially certified as a supported source platform for OSAM migrations.

Additional Information

  • HCX OSAM is not officially supported for the migration of bare-metal physical servers.
  • The hypervisors validated and tested for OSAM are KVM and Hyper-V.
  • While some customers have successfully utilized OSAM for physical server migrations in the field, this use case remains outside the officially validated compatibility matrix. Any execution of OSAM for physical workloads is performed at the customer's own risk and falls outside standard Broadcom Support guidelines.
  • Submit an HCX Feature Request . [VCF Operations > VCF Operations - Workload Mobility (HCX)]
  • Supported Guest Operating Systems for OSAM
  • Migration with Converter Standalone
