Issue/Introduction

  • Issue reported when the VLAN backed segment configured as service/external interface on Tier-0/Tier1 gateway.
  • Tier-o Gateway reports "Down" status.
    • Tier-0 down status reports transport node status as "success" and Errors as "No Errors"

  • HA mode on Tier-0 gateway reports HA status as "Down".

  • HA status from edge CLI on Tier-0 SR reports "Down" status.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

The Edge High Availability (HA) channel relies on both the management and overlay/TEP networks. If an Edge node lacks an overlay transport zone configuration, Edge HA will start reporting down. This failure subsequently brings down the Tier-0 Gateway silently, without generating any error logs.

Edge High Availability (HA) Requirements:

  • A TEP network is required for the HA Channel.
  • The HA Channel uses the overlay/TEP and management networks of the Edge.
  • A TEP network is required even when the Edge is used only for VLAN.

Resolution

Configure the edge node with overlay transport zone to fix the issue.

  • Steps to add overlay transport zone:
    • Login to NSX UI. Go to --> System--> Fabric --> Nodes--> Select and edit the edge node used in Tier-0 gateway --> Go to "nsxHostSwitch" section --> Add overlay transport Zone --> Click on Save.
      • If there is no overlay transport zone created, Create overlay transport zone by referencing following tech doc: create-transport-zones
    • Go to the Tier-0 gateway, Refresh the page. Tier-0 status turns into "Success".
