VMware SDDC Manager

Issue/Introduction

Immediately after restarting the SDDC Manager appliance or its services, users may observe multiple placeholder tasks in the task panel, displaying as follows:

Task                      Subtask                                 Task Status  Last Occurred
Fetching subtask info...  Fetching subtask info...  [Cancel Task] Pending      YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm
Fetching subtask info...  Fetching subtask info...  [Cancel Task] Pending      YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm
Fetching subtask info...  Fetching subtask info...  [Cancel Task] Pending      YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm
Fetching subtask info...  Fetching subtask info...  [Cancel Task] Pending      YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm
Fetching subtask info...  Fetching subtask info...  [Cancel Task] Pending      YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm
...

Note: The timestamp shown in the "Last Occurred" column for these placeholder tasks often reflects the time the UI was opened, rather than the actual execution time of the past tasks.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 5.x

Cause

During the startup sequence of the SDDC Manager, backend services require time to fully initialize and retrieve historical task data from the database.

While the backend is in this initialization phase, the SDDC Manager UI cannot immediately fetch the actual task details. As a result, the UI temporarily displays the placeholder text "Fetching subtask info..." in a "Pending" state while waiting for the data to load. This is an expected behavior.

Resolution

No administrative action is required. This is a temporary display state during the system boot process.

1. Please allow sufficient time for the backend services to fully initialize.
2. Once the initialization is complete, the UI will automatically replace the placeholder text with the actual task details and its true status upon the next periodic refresh.

Note: If the "fetching task info" state persists beyond a reasonable initialization window, Please restarted the services of the SDDC Manager using the command: /opt/vmware/vcf/operationsmanager/scripts/cli/sddcmanager_restart_services.sh

If the "Fetching subtask info..." state persists continuously and does not resolve naturally, it may indicate a different issue. In such cases, please refer to related Knowledge Base articles, such as KB 313342.
