Issue/Introduction

  • Attempting to migrate a Linux virtual machine that has more than 15 attached disks using VMware HCX OS Assisted Migration (OSAM) fails during the fix-up phase.
  • The following error message is observed in the HCX user interface or within the /common/logs/admin/app.log
    "jobFailed":true,"error":"Failed to perform fix-up operation on migrated VM. Invalid configuration for device '0'.","result":{"error":"Failed to perform fix-up operation on migrated VM. Invalid configuration for device '0'."}}

Environment

VMware HCX 4.11.3

Cause

VMware HCX OS Assisted Migration (OSAM) has a limitation regarding the number of disks supported for Linux workloads.
VMs with a Linux Guest OS can have a maximum of 15 hard disks attached.
The fix-up operation fails because the source VM configuration exceeds this supported limit.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, the total number of attached hard disks on the source Linux VM must be reduced to 15 or fewer to meet the HCX OSAM requirements.
Once the disk count is within the supported limit, re-initiate the HCX OS Assisted Migration.

This issue is resolved in VMware HCX 4.11.4, available at Broadcom downloads.

If you are having difficulty finding and downloading software, please review the Download Broadcom products and software KB
