Rally - How to use "Export with Descendants" (Deep Export) in the Custom List Widget

Issue/Introduction

We are currently reviewing our internal tools in preparation for the Custom Page and SDK End of Life (EOL) scheduled for October 2026.

Our team currently relies on the "Custom Grid with Deep Export" custom app to manage Features along with their associated User Stories and Tasks. Since this app will be retired, we are looking for a supported native alternative.

Rally EOL on App SDK and Custom Pages

Resolution

Rally has introduced a Deep Export capability to the Custom List widget. This feature allows you to export hierarchical data such as Portfolio Items or User Stories along with their children and tasks into a single CSV file. This eliminates the need to export data layer by layer.

Steps to Perform a Deep Export:

1. Navigate to your Custom List widget.
   
   
2. Click the Actions (gear icon) in the top right corner of the widget.
   
   
3. Select Import/Export.
   
   
4. Choose Download CSV with descendants
   .
   In the configuration dialog:
   • • Select the Type (Top-level item).
     • Select the Descendant Level (e.g., Portfolio Item and Direct Children or Children and Tasks).
5. Click Download.

Important Notes & Limitations:

• Supported Artifacts: This feature currently supports Portfolio Items, User Stories and Defects parented directly to Portfolio Items, and Tasks.

   

• Unsupported Artifacts: Deep export is not available for nested User Stories, Defects parented to User Stories, Test Cases, or Test Sets.

   

• Export Limit: You can export a maximum of 20,000 items per download. This count includes all parent items plus their descendants.
