Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • When performing a storage vMotion by selecting individual disks of the VM to a target datastore, the task is stuck with the below message:

  • The same message shows up regardless of what target datastore we select.
  • The migration page shows an error about HA:

Environment

VMware vSphere 7.x

VMware vSphere 8.x

Cause

Since the host where the VM is residing has issues with HA configuration, the task will not proceed.

This error can be due to the following reasons:

  • ESXi host problem with third-party VIB (such as a compatibility issue)
  • ESXi host heartbeat datastore problems
  • vCLS related issues
  • Certificate Mode being set to "Thumbprint" and the current certificates configured for the ESX hosts.

Resolution

  • To resolve the issue temporarily, disable the HA on the cluster for the time being and re-try the migration task. To disable HA, refer the following kb: Disabling and enabling VMware vSphere High Availability (vSphere HA)
  • Now, after selecting the target storage the compatibility check will succeed:
  • The migration task will complete post that.

To work on the HA issue of the hosts, refer the following kb articles:

Error: "vSphere HA agent cannot be correctly installed or configured"

Powering on a VM fails with "The host is reporting errors in its attempts to provide vSphere HA support"
