Issue/Introduction

  • The issue occurs during an upgrade from VMware NSX version 3.2.0 to 4.x.

  • The Transport Node (TN) configuration status fails or hangs at 64% ("Applying NSX switch configuration"), with an error similar to the below:
TransportNode HostSwitches Migration to VDS: Failed to handle reply for TransportNodeHostSwitches migration to VDS result message.
  • The following error is observed in the nsxapi.log:
host_config_status: CONFIG_STATUS_FAILEDfailure_code: 8804failure_message: "TransportNode HostSwitches Migration to VDS: Failed to handle reply for TransportNodeHostSwitches migration to VDS result message. [TN=TransportNode/UUID], Reason: MessagingException."
  • The solution outlined in KB# 371804 was attempted and did not resolve the issue.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

This is a condition that may occur in a VMware NSX environment.

This issue occurs due to stale NVDS to VDS migration entries remaining in the management database (Corfu) from a previous migration attempt. After upgrading to NSX 4.x, these leftover parameters incorrectly trigger a host switch migration flag causing the realization process to fail as it attempts an unsupported migration step.
