Issue/Introduction

When accessing the Usage Meter (UM) console from the vCenter Server, the system displays messages similar to the following:

systemd-journal: Detected aborted journal
[###] EXT4-fs error (device ###): ext4_journal_check_start: : comm
systemd-journal: Detected aborted journal
[###] EXT4-fs (###): Remounting filesystem read-only
[###] EXT4-fs error (device ###): ext4_journal_check_start: : comm

As a result, the Usage Meter may become unresponsive, and the UI is  inaccessible.

Environment

VCF Usage Meter 9.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the underlying storage backing the photon-based appliance becomes unavailable or experiences temporary I/O failures.
To prevent further data corruption, the photon filesystem automatically remounts itself in read-only mode, resulting in restricted operation and potential service disruption.

Resolution

To restore normal functionality:
  • Power cycle the Usage Meter virtual machine from the vCenter Server.
  • After reboot, verify that the filesystem mounts normally and the UI becomes accessible.
  • If the issue reoccurs, investigate the underlying storage for connectivity, performance, or hardware issues. Open a case with Broadcom Support Team.
