Issue/Introduction

  • Upon ESX patch upgrade from version VMware ESXi-8.0.3d-24585383 to VMware ESXi-8.0.3-24784735, you may experience the virtual machine fails to connect over the network when a network is assigned to it.

  • You may observe change in vmnic's enumeration/alias such as vmnic0-vmnic2 prior to ESX patch upgrade changes to vmnic1-vmnic3 post ESX patch upgrade.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x

Resolution

Workaround :

Compare the mac-address of the physical adapters (vmnic's) from an older reference prior to ESX patch upgrade and accordingly map the uplink to the vSwitch.

Example :

Before ESX patch upgrade (vmnic's enumeration was vmnic0-vmnic2) :

vswitch0 : vmnic0
vswitch1 : vmnic1
vswitch2 : vmnic2

After ESX patch upgrade (vmnic's enumeration was vmnic1-vmnic3) :

vswitch0 : vmnic1
vswitch1 : vmnic2
vswitch2 : vmnic3
