Issue/Introduction

  • In vCenter UI, vSAN Cluster > Monitor > vSAN > Skyline health reports warning "Cluster and Host Component utilization".

  • 'Host level' tab shows health error for the hosts which have reached or reaching the component utilization limit per host (9000).

  • From Host CLI, 'esxcli vsan debug limit get' shows the Free components available on host.

    # esxcli vsan debug limit get

    Component Limit Health: red

    Max Components: 9000
    Free Components: 0
    Disk Free Space Health: green
Lowest Free Disk Space: 11 %
    Used Disk Space: 79649266561191 bytes
Used Disk Space (GB) : 74179.16 GB
    Total Disk Space: 138266825195520 bytes
Total Disk Space (GB): 128771.02 GB

  • Snapshots and backups for the Virtual machines might fail.

  • This could also impact the new Virtual machine creation and powering on the existing Virtual machines.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x
VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

When there are too many unassociated objects on vSAN datastore, it would be consuming the components. This would cause the vSAN Cluster to reach its maximum component limit.

Please follow the below KB to list and identify the Unassociated objects:
Procedures for identifying Unassociated vSAN objects

Resolution

  • Delete the unassociated objects which are no longer needed to free up the components usage on the vSAN Cluster. Please contact Broadcom support for any assistance in cleaning up the unassociated objects.

Note: Unassociated does not necessarily mean unused/unneeded. Any vSAN object that is not associated with a registered Virtual Machine will appear as 'Unassociated' when checked via RVC.
