"Error: java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out" when vCenter Server frequently disconnects and reconnects in VMware Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

  • The vCenter Server repeatedly disconnects and reconnects every few minutes in VMware Cloud Director (VCD).
  • From the VCD UI you will get the following error message:

    Error caused vCenter Server disconnect -
    https://<vCenter-FQDN>/sdk/vimService invocation failed with "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out"

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.0.1

Cause

  • The issue occurs because of network interruptions or network packet drops from vCenter end. To check the network connection between VCD and vCenter you can use the following command to understand if there were any network disruptions between them.

    SSH to VCD cells and use the following command: ping -c 10 <vCenter_ip_address>

Resolution
