Issue/Introduction

When installing or upgrading a Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) in VMware Live Site Recovery, the adapter may fail to appear within the Site Recovery HTML5 user interface. While the appliance management interface may report the SRA as "Installed," the SRM service fails to register the binary for use in the UI.

Symptoms:

  • In VMware Live Site Recovery (SRM), newly installed Storage Replication Adapters (SRAs) may fail to appear in the Site Recovery user interface.

Environment

VMware Live Recovery 9.x

Site Recovery Manager 8.x

Cause

This issue occurs due to a UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) registration conflict. SRM assigns a persistent UUID to each SRA. If a legacy adapter, a duplicate installation, or a generic container image (e.g., sra_image:latest) has already registered the UUID associated with the new SRA, the SRM service discards the new installation path to prevent inventory inconsistency.

VMware-dr.log reports the following details:

YYYY-MM-DDTHrmm:ssZ info vmware-dr[03245] [SRM@6876 sub=Storage opID=d0867ae0-####-####-####-############-reloadAdapters:2f6b] LocateAdapters: Discarded path changed adapter (ac167a96-1111-2222-333-#######56e, hpesra:10.2.0)
YYYY-MM-DDTHrmm:ssZ verbose vmware-dr[03245] [SRM@6876 sub=Storage opID=d0867ae0-####-####-####-############-reloadAdapters:2f6b] LocateAdapters: Found existing adapter (ac167a96-1111-2222-333-#######56e, sra_image:latest) -> The Same UUID is associate with new SRA name which indicates the conflict.

Resolution

  1. Perform Pre-Maintenance Tasks:.
    • Take a virtual machine snapshot of the SRM appliances at both the Protected and Recovery sites.

  2. Remove Legacy Adapters:
    • Log into the SRM Appliance Management Interface (AMI) at https://<SRM_IP>:5480.
    • Navigate to Storage Replication Adapters.
    • Delete the Old SRA associated with the storage vendor.

  3. Clear SRM Inventory Cache:
    • SSH into the SRM Appliance as admin.
    • Switch to root: su -.
    • Restart the SRM service to flush the memory-resident adapter list: systemctl restart vmware-srm

  4. Install Unified Adapter:
    • Return to the SRM VAMI (5480) UI page.
    • Upload and install the desired SRA bundle.
    • Ensure the SRA is Installed.

  5. Rescan Inventory:
    • Log in to the Site Recovery HTML5 UI.
    • Navigate to Site Pair > Configure > Storage Replication Adapters.
    • Click Rescan Adapters.
    • The new SRA version should now be visible.

  6. Run discover devices to validate device replication status.
    • Navigate to Array Managers and perform a Discover Devices operation to validate the end-to-end replication status.
