Issue/Introduction

vCenter Server Pre-upgrade check result error:

VMDir Replication between partners is not working.
Make sure vmdir service is reachable and started in partner nodes and this node before continuing.

Environment

vCenter 7.x

Cause

You deployed a new vCenter when you were trying to upgrade a vCenter.

After deployment the new vCenter is linked to the other vCenter(s).  

Resolution

  1. Verify VMDir State is Normal on all linked vCenters.

    /usr/lib/vmware-vmafd/bin/dir-cli state get 

  2. Verify Replication shows the newly deployed vCenter (check all linked vCenters).

    a. cd into the correct location.
    cd /usr/lib/vmware-vmdir/bin
    b. Run the command to showservers. 
    ./vdcrepadmin -f showservers -h localhost -u administrator
    c. Run the command to showpartners.
    ./vdcrepadmin -f showpartners -h localhost -u administrator
    d. Run the command to showpartnerstatus.
    ./vdcrepadmin -f showpartnerstatus -h localhost -u administrator

  3. If you have taken powered off snapshots of all the linked vCenters then revert your snapshots on all linked vCenters and retry the upgrade. 
    1. If you have only taken a powered-on snapshot or only taken a snapshot of one or some of the linked vCenters but not all, do not use the snapshots as they are not valid and could cause VMDir corruption.
  4. If you cannot revert snapshots create a case with VMware to obtain help removing the bad entry.
