Autosys Workload Automation

Issue/Introduction

This article explains the probable impact of Antivirus application on the Autosys environment and the recommendations to follow.

Environment

Autosys Workload Automation 12.X, 24.X

Cause

From the past experience, the real-time scanning of AutoSys files can lead to performance degradation, file-locking issues, and even component crashes.

Antivirus software might impact AutoSys operations in several ways:

  • Performance Degradation: Real-time scanning of the files that AutoSys components frequently access can introduce significant latency, slowing down job processing and overall system responsiveness. High CPU consumption by antivirus processes has been observed when scanning directories like /opt/CA/
  • File Locking: Antivirus software may lock files while scanning them. This can prevent AutoSys processes from accessing necessary files, leading to errors or component failure. For instance, if a job is trying to write to a standard output or error file that is locked by a scanner, the job may fail.
  • Component Crashes: In some cases, the interaction between the antivirus software and the AutoSys agent can lead to the agent crashing. This can be due to file locking or the antivirus preventing the agent from correctly reading system information like free disk space.
  • Incorrect Disk Space Monitoring: Antivirus software can interfere with the agent's ability to monitor disk space, potentially causing the agent to shut down to prevent perceived data corruption, even when no disk space issue exists.

Resolution

To ensure the stability and performance of Autosys, it is recommended to exclude /opt/CA/ (and sub-directories) from the AV Scans.
