Error: "Failed to validate independent Disks with Fast Provisioned enabled. Check log file for errors" during NSX Migration precheck in VMware Cloud Director UI

Issue/Introduction

• Running the NSX Migration Assessment/Precheck may fail with the error:
  “Failed to validate independent Disks with Fast Provisioned enabled. Check log file for errors”
  
  
• The error appears even though no named or independent disks are visible in the VMware Cloud Director UI.
  
  
• Migration assessment cannot continue until validation completes successfully.

NSX Migration Tool 1.4.x

Cause

This issue can occur when Fast Provisioning is enabled on the backing Provider VDC and one or more VMs in the Org VDC have independent disks assigned different storage policies than the VM Home storage policy.

In some cases, stale or orphaned disk metadata may persist in the Cloud Director database even when no independent disks are visible in the UI, leading the NSX Migration precheck to fail validation.

Resolution

For the VMs in the problematic VDC

1. Check for independent disks in vCenter:
   Review VM hardware > Edit  
   Under Hard disks check Disk Mode
   Confirm if any disks are marked Independent Persistent or Independent Non-Persistent.
   
   
2. Verify the VM Home storage policy and each disk’s policy.
   On the VM > Configure > Policies
   Check if VM Home and any Hard disks are on the same policy
   Align all to the same policy where required.
   
   
3. Check the Org VDC Disks view in Cloud Director:
   Navigate to Organization VDC > Disks and confirm if any named/independent disks are listed.
   
   If no independent disks are present:
   Disable Fast Provisioning on the backing Provider VDC.
   Re-run the NSX Migration Precheck.
   
   If independent disks are present and required:
   Align their storage policy with the VM Home storage policy before re-running assessment.
