Issue/Introduction

  • NSX Edge was created from vCenter Server using setup "Network connectivity" or NSX Manager UI 'Setup Network connectivity'.
  • The simplified network setup workflow in 9.0 creates DVPGs based on user input and connects the Edge VM to the created DVPG. DVPG is deleted when found unused since not connected to any VM.
  • After stopping NSX Edge, restart NSX Manager (e.g., when restarting the VCF).
  • The dvportgroup used by the NSX Edge uplink is found unused and will be deleted.

Environment

VCF NSX 9.0

Cause

When you create an NSX Edge from vCenter Server using setup “Network connectivity" or NSX Manager UI 'Setup Network connectivity', an ephemeral port group is assigned to the uplink.

NSX Manager runs cleanup unused DVPG job daily and once on application  start on these DVPGs. DVPG is cleared when not in use connected to any VM

If the cleanup unused DVPG job runs when NSX Edge is powered off, the ephemeral port groups assigned to NSX Edge will be cleaned up.

Resolution

Currently, there is no resolution.

If this issue occurs, please edit the virtual machine settings and assign a new port group to the NSX Edge.

Note: Edge is configured with 2 DVPG by the 9.0 ‘Setup Network Connectivity’ wizard. The exact number of DVPGs depends on the ESX nic count and if the DVPG can be reused.

  1. Create two distributed port groups.
  2. Change the configuration of the first port group as follows:
    General => Port binding => Ephemeral - no binding
    VLAN => VLAN type => VLAN trunking
    Teaming and failover => Active uplinks - uplink1, Standby uplinks - uplink2
  3. Change the configuration of the second port group as follows:
    General => Port binding =>Ephemeral - no binding
    VLAN => VLAN type => VLAN trunking
    Teaming and failover => Active uplinks - uplink2, Standby uplinks - uplink1
  4. Assign the created port groups to Network adapters 2 and 3 of the NSX Edge in the virtual machine settings.
  5. In the NSX Manager UI, System - Fabric - Nodes - Edge Transport Nodes, select the checkbox for the Edge Node and click Actions and then click Sync Edge Configuration.
