VMware Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

  • The environment was recently upgraded from VMware Cloud Director(VCD) 10.5.x to 10.6.x.
  • The Provider VDC list is showing as blank and the Organization VDC(OVDC) creation is unable to proceed.
  • The Provider VDC section in the creation dialog box has the following message:
The list contains only provider VDCs that the system administrator granted for this organization. Select a provider VDC from the list or contact your system administrator if no provider VDCs appear

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x

Cause

The issue is caused by the tenants getting promoted to Sub-Providers after the upgrade to VCD 10.6.x. Sub-provider organizations need grants before they can create any tenant VDCs.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, there are 2 options:

  1. If 3-tier tenancy needs to be continued, grant the PVDC, network pool and storage policies to the sub-provider organizations before they can be assigned to OVDCs.
    1. Grant Your VMware Cloud Director Provider VDC Resources to a Sub-Provider
    2. Grant a VMware Cloud Director Provider VDC Storage Policy
    3. Grant a Network Pool to a VMware Cloud Director Sub-Provider Organization
  2. Disable 3-tier tenancy by unpublishing the Sub-Provider role. Check Resolution in Tenants in VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x are automatically promoted to the type "Sub-Provider" for the steps.
