Issue/Introduction

  • License Inventory Monitoring alarm is triggered in vCenter frequently

  • In the licenses view (Administration>>Licenses) of vCenter UI, one or more licenses where the license usage is greater than capacity

  • /var/log/vmware/vpxd/vpxd.log reports below errors.

vpxd[7247]: Event [22921713] [1-1] [YYYY-06-16T02:52:04.983335Z] [vim.event.LicenseNonComplianceEvent] [error] [] [] [22921713] [License inventory is not compliant. Licenses are overused]

Environment

  • vCenter 8.x

Cause

This alarm is triggered when the consumption of any assigned license including (ESXi host, vSAN, or SRM) exceeds its allocated capacity within vCenter.

Resolution

  1. Check for Overused Licenses
    1. Log in to the vSphere Client with administrative credentials.
    2. Navigate to Menu > Administration.
    3. Under Licensing, click Licenses.
    4. Click the Products tab.
    5. Select the specific license key (e.g., vSphere 8.x Product / License) you suspect is being over-consumed.
    6. Click the Hosts (or Assets) tab.
    7. Verify that your physical CPU counts or usage do not exceed the capacity of the license key. If they do, unassign the old keys and assign higher-capacity licenses.

  2. Remove Old Host Assets
    1. If you recently replaced or removed physical ESXi hosts, their old assets may still be linked to the license.
    2. Select the suspected license key, go to the Hosts tab, and remove any legacy hosts that are no longer present in your vCenter inventory. License inventory is not compliant. License are overused.

  3.  Acknowledge and Reset
    1. Once any configuration changes are made, navigate back to the triggered alarm in the Monitor tab, click Acknowledge, and select Reset to Green

Additional Information

License inventory is not compliant. License are overused.
