Issue/Introduction

  • When listing VMs to add to a new migration group in HCX, some VMs are not selectable, and appear greyed out with a warning message: "Cannot migrate workload, reason: Virtual Machine is undergoing migration"

  • Ensure that Mobility Groups does not have ongoing migration for the affected VM.

Environment

VMware HCX

Cause

The affected VMs were not properly cleaned up when a prior migration job about these VMs failed then was archived or deleted. During the validation of VMs to be migrated, references to this migration job are still associated with the VMs, marking them as still being undergoing migration.

Resolution

Workaround:

If the VMs can be temporarily powered off, removing them from inventory in vSphere then re-registering them from their .VMX definition file as new VMs will regenerate their VM_ID, ensuring that the reference to the stale migration job will not be associated with them anymore. This allows the migration job validation to view them as valid, and selectable for a new migration job.

Fix:

If the workaround is not applicable, then contact Broadcom Support for assistance.
