VMware HCX

Issue/Introduction

  • When listing VMs to add to a new migration group in HCX, some VMs are not selectable, and appear greyed out with a warning message: "Cannot migrate workload, reason: Virtual Machine is undergoing migration"

  • Ensure that mobility groups do not have ongoing migration for the affected VM.

Environment

VMware HCX

Cause

This behaviour occurs due to one of the following reasons:

  • Existing Membership: The VM is already a member of an active or draft Mobility Group. HCX prevents a single VM from being assigned to multiple groups simultaneously.
  • Stale Database State: A prior migration job involving these VMs failed and was not cleaned up properly in the HCX database (HybridityTags table), leaving a stale "undergoing migration" flag.

Resolution

Follow these steps to restore VM visibility:

  1. Navigate to Migration > Mobility Groups in the HCX Manager UI.
  2. Search for the affected VM across all active and draft groups.
  3. If the VM is found, remove it from the existing group or delete the draft group.
  4. Refresh the inventory in the HCX Manager.
  5. If the VM is not part of any group, perform the following workaround:
    • Power off the affected VM temporarily.
    • Unregister the VM from the vCenter inventory.
    • Re-register the VM using its .vmx file to generate a new VM_ID.
  6. If the issue persists, collect source and target HCX log bundles and Contact Broadcom Support.
