Issue/Introduction

When upgrading vCenter Server from 7.0 to 8.0 and then reverting to 7.0 from a snapshot, the following issues occur:

- vCLS virtual machines are placed in the "Discovered virtual machine" folder.
- The following message appears in the [Summary] tab of the DRS cluster.

vSphere DRS functionality was impacted due to unhealthy state vSphere Cluster Services caused by the unavailability of vSphere Cluster Service VMs. vSphere Cluster Service VMs are required to maintain the health of vSphere DRS.

Environment

vCenter Server 7.0
vCenter Server 8.0

Cause

After vCenter Server starts running on version 8.0, new vCLS virtual machines are re-deployed on the ESXi hosts.
Since these vCLS virtual machines are not compatible with vCenter Server 7.0, they are placed in the default "Discovered virtual machine" folder.

For the impact of an unhealthy VCLS state, please refer to DRS functionality impacted by unhealthy state of the vSphere Cluster Services (vCLS).

Resolution

1. Enable retreat mode.
2. If any vCLS virtual machines remain, delete them manually.
3. Disable retreat mode.

For instructions on enabling and disabling retreat mode, please refer to Disable vCLS on a Cluster via Retreat Mode.
