Issue/Introduction

  • You are trying to remove uplink from a DVS through vSphere UI >> DVS >> Settings >> Edit settings >> Uplinks but vSphere throws an error stating 'The resource <uplink ID> is in use' as in below screenshots.

  • Below is the screenshot of the Error: The resource <uplink ID> is in use

  • You already made sure that there are no vmnics attached to any of the ESXi/s under the uplink (<uplink ID>) which you are trying to remove from the DVS.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

Cause

Several port groups within the Distributed Virtual Switch (DVS) are configured with additional uplinks set in an active/active teaming mode, whereas others have all uplinks designated as standby or unused. This inconsistency in uplink teaming configurations across port groups is preventing the removal of uplinks at the DVS level.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior and to successfully remove the uplink/s from the DVS, they must first be set to 'unused' in all the port groups by guiding to port group >> edit settings >> teaming and failover >> failover order.
Post above steps are performed, you should be able to remove the uplink (<uplink ID>) from the DVS configuration.

If incase the issue persists even after setting the <uplink ID> to unused under all port groups on the DVS, please open a case with Broadcom Support for further investigation.
