Issue/Introduction

  • When logged into the NSX UI, there is an alarm stated as below.
"The number of objects defined in the system for Edge Clusters has reached 10 which is above the minimum capacity threshold of 70.0%"

  • In NSX /var/log/syslog, below message is seen in the log file.
syslog:2025-05-08T11:04:55.169Z ####-####-#### NSX 4391 MONITORING [nsx@6876 alarmId=" #######-####-####-#######" alarmState="OPEN" comp="nsx-manager" entId=" #######-####-####-#######" eventFeatureName="capacity" eventSev="MEDIUM" eventState="Off" eventType="minimum_capacity_threshold" level="WARNING" nodeId=" #######-####-####-#######" subcomp="monitoring"] The number of objects defined in the system for Edge Clusters has reached 10 and is at or below the minimum capacity threshold of 70.0%.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • The alarm is due to exceeding the recommended limit for the number of Edge Node Clusters in the NSX environment.

  • The NSX Manager (Medium) has a limit of creating 12 Edge Node Clusters within a given environment. Currently, if there are 9 or more edge clusters created, it means the NSX is approaching its capacity for creating additional clusters.

  • Refer to the NSX Edge config max tool at ConfigMax NSX Edge.

  • Given that the NSX edge cluster is already utilizing over 70% of the maximum allowable cluster capacity, any further attempts to add or configure additional Edge Node Clusters would likely lead to resource constraints leading to potential performance degradation.

Resolution

  • To support additional Edge clusters, resize the NSX Manager to Large or Extra Large, which allows for up to 265 Edge clusters.
