Unable to remove a VM from the protection group

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• After SRM upgrade, below mentioned error appearS in the protection group:
  " Invalid: Protected VM deleted."
  
• Remove VM from the protection group fails with the same error:
  Operation Failed
  "The object 'dr.replication.ProtectedVm:########-####-####-####-############:protected-vm-########' has already been deleted or has not been completely created
Operation ID: ########-####-####-####-############
MM/DD/YY, TT:MM:SS PM -####"

Environment

VMware Site Recovery Manager 8.x
VMware Site Recovery Manager 9.x

Cause

• A stale VM entry remained in the Protection Group, even though the VM had already been removed from the DR site.
• This stale entry in the SRM database prevented the successful removal of the VM from the Protection Group.

Cause validation:

• Run the command "python SrmDbTool.py query ProtectedVm" to confirm VM presence in SRM DB on the DC site
