Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • When attempting to delete the Protection Group, an error is encountered.

The object 'dr.replication.ProtectedVm:#######-####-####-####-###########:protected-vm-#######' has already been deleted or has not been completely created.

Environment

  • VMware Live Site Recovery 9.x
  • VMware Live Site Recovery 8.x

Cause

  • This issue typically arises due to state inconsistency between the two SRM sites. In this case, the Protection Group was either:
    • Deleted from one site but not fully removed from the paired site, or

    • Created but the operation did not complete successfully, leaving stale object references in the SRM database on one site.

  • Such inconsistencies result in ManagedObjectNotFound faults when the UI or backend services attempt to operate on the orphaned PG object.
  • The following entries in the /opt/vmware/support/logs/srm/vmware-dr.log file confirm that SRM attempts to act on a PG that no longer exists in the paired site or has not completed creation:

yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss warning vmware-dr[1933810] [SRM@6876 sub=RemoteSite.RemoteDrServer.PCM opID=aa7ade56]
Create failed for filter token '29' after '2441' attempts
(vmodl.fault.ManagedObjectNotFound) {
   obj = 'dr.replication.VmProtectionGroup:2af10f8f-e255-####-####-7575f26c606b:vm-protection-group-######',
   msg = "The object has already been deleted or has not been completely created"
