Issue/Introduction

vMotions may fail to an NSX prepped host transport node with the vCenter vMotion wizard reporting a compatibility error of "vdl2: down":

Currently connected network interface 'Network adapter 1' uses network 'DVSwitch[## ## ## ## ## ## ## ## ## ## ## NSX port group [dvportgroup-####](vdl2 down)', which is not accessible.

Attempts to resolve this through host reboots, unprepping NSX, and reprepping NSX are not successful - the vdl2 status is still down:

[~] net-dvs -l | grep status.component.vdl2
                com.vmware.common.opaqueDvs.status.component.vdl2 = down ,        propType = RUNTIME

Environment

VMware vSphere

VMware NSX

Cause

Unknown at this time.

Resolution

  1. Place the affected host into Maintenance Mode.
  2. Remove the host from the NSX cluster and confirm NSX has been uninstalled from the host.
    1. Uninstall NSX from a Managed Host in a vSphere Cluster
  3. Most all host networking to a standard switch
  4. Remove the host from the VDS
  5. Add the host back to the VDS, migrating all required networking to the VDS
  6. Add the host back into the NSX cluster
  7. Run the diagnostic command to confirm the vdl2 component is operational:

    net-dvs -l | grep status.component.vdl2

    The output should now show:

    com.vmware.common.opaqueDvs.status.component.vdl2 = up , propType = RUNTIME

  8. Perform vMotion to the re-prepped host.

Additional Information

Unable to migrate virtual machine in NSX-T prepared hosts - vdl2: down
