Issue/Introduction

  • NSX 4.2.x new Bare Metal Edge fails to install
  • After about 10mins the install fails while trying to install the nsx-edge-node debian package

        'nsx-edge-node']' returned non-zero exit status 100.
"An error occurred. Press enter to start a shell"

  • After entering the shell, /var/crash/ install file shows the error

       Setting up nsx-edge-datapath
root : unable to resolve host nsx: Temporary failure in name resolution
expired password for user root (password aged)

Environment

VMware NSX 4.2.x

Cause

The base Bare Metal Edge OS has a root local user account created in the image. NSX has a default password expiration policy of 90 days. As a result installing NSX BME 90 days after it was released will fail since the root password will have expired.
BME deployments that are already installed successfully are not impacted and upgrades to NSX 4.2.x are not impacted.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in VMware NSX 4.2.1.2 available at Broadcom Downloads.
If you are having difficulty finding and downloading software, please review the KB Download Broadcom products and software.

If you are unable to upgrade your NSX Manager, you can deploy the Express patch version 4.2.1.2, which will run alongside the maintenance release version of the NSX Manager, as long as the Express patch is part of the same maintenance release track.

For example, if you are running NSX Manager version 4.2.1, you can deploy NSX Bare Metal Edge version 4.2.1.2. This configuration is supported and should work without issues.

Please ensure that both components are within the same maintenance release track to maintain compatibility.
