Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to edit the Host Customization for a host associated with a Host Profile, the customization window appears blank.

    Navigate to Policies and Profiles > Host Profiles > Select the Host Profile > Right-click > Edit Host Customization.

  • Import host customizations exported from another host within the same cluster also fails.

    Navigate to Policies and Profiles > Host Profiles > Select the Host Profile > Right-click > Edit Host Customization > Select the target ESXi host > Import Host Customization.

  • The following error was observed in the /var/log/vmware/vpxd/vpxd.log file on the vCenter Server:

    YY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS error vpxd[] [Originator@6876 sub=moHostProfileMgr opID=########-####-####-####-########] [MoHostProfileManager::RetrieveAnswerFileForProfile] caught ExecuteException : Failed to run Execute operation on <esxi-hostname>:

    --> Invalid vSwitch specified

Environment

vCenter Server 7.0.x
vCenter Server 8.0.x

Cause

The ESXi host used to extract the Host Profile had an additional vSwitch configuration, leading to inconsistencies in the Host Profile when applied across the cluster.

Resolution

  • Add or Remove the vSwitch from the ESXi Hosts.
  • Update the Host Profile, and re-try host customization.
  • If the issue persists, extract a new Host Profile and attach the new profile to the Host(s).
