vCSA VAMI Backup Failure Using SMB Protocol | NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

• vCSA VAMI backup fails while using SMB protocol.

 

• Errors similar to the following are found in /var/log/vmware/applmgmt.log or /var/log/vmware/backup.log or /var/log/vmware/backupScheduler.log:

[SMBClientStorageIOLib::_process_cmd_output:SMBClientStorageIOLib.py:97] ERROR: Command failed with error: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

Environment

VMware vSphere 7.x

VMware vSphere 8.x

Cause

This issue can be seen if the service account used for VAMI backup has insufficient permissions on the SMB directory used for storing the vCSA backup.

Resolution

Use a different user preferably administrator or user with full admin privileges  to test the backup.
