Issue/Introduction

On vCenter Server 8.0, when attempting to check for vCenter updates from within the VAMI, the update check fails with the error: "Target URL certificate verification failed."

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

Cause

  • The check certificate option in VAMI page can cause this issue when actions like SSL inspection are performed in the environment.
  • Unable to reach the repository
  • Incorrect ISO selection

Resolution

To resolve this issue, perform the following:

  1. If the repository used is a default one (provided by Broadcom), uncheck the "Check Certificate (recommended)" option as it should be trusted:
    • After unchecking it, all the updates are shown as expected.
  2. Update the vCenter Server

Note:

    • Before attempting to update any vCenter Server Appliance or Platform Service Controller, please ensure proper backups have been taken.
    • Take offline snapshot of the appliance (while the VCSA or PSC virtual machine is powered off). If possible, VMware recommends Appliance File Based backups.

Additional Information

As an alternative to updating the vCenter, refer to KB Patching/Updating VMware vCenter Server Appliance VCSA and Platform Service Controller PSC through Appliance Management Interface VAMI.

If updating via ISO, ensure the correct Full Patch (FP) ISO has been downloaded. For example, refer to the below screenshot:
