Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Patching ESXi host using Critical or Non-Critical patch baseline fails with error "missing component(s) esxio-update" if custom roll-up bundle is imported into VUM depot.
  • This issue will observed only on airgap scenarios where vCenter Servers don't have connectivity to online VUM Depot or UMDS Depot.
  • Log file /var/run/log/esxupdate.log on ESXi will show similar to below snippets :
    <Time stamp> Er(11) esxupdate[530426]: esximage.Errors.ProfileValidationError: Profile (Updated) DEL-ESXi_801.21813344-A02 is missing component(s) esxio-update. Make sure the image contains these component(s) at a version equal or higher
    <Time stamp> Db(15) esxupdate[530426]: <<<
  • Update Manager log on vCenter Server /var/log/vmware/vmware-updatemgr/vum-server/vmware-vum-server.log will log similar to below snippets :
    <Time stamp>  verbose vmware-vum-server[1236215] [Originator@6876 sub=SingleHostRemediateTask.SingleHostRemediateTask{64}] [singleHostRemediateTaskBase 296] update: esxio-update_8.0.2-0.0.22380479 cannot be applied to host platform
  • Failure to configure vSphere HA on ESXi 8.0 U2. 

  • Manual VIB updates via ESXCLI failure. 

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.0.2
VMware vCenter Server 8.0.2

Resolution

Fixed in VMware ESXi 8.0 Update 3. See Download Broadcom products and software for steps to download this release.

Workaround:
To work around the issue, import the VMware-provided offline bundle that corresponds to the custom image into the VUM depot along with the custom image that helps to correct the baseline content.
