DNS Settings Modification in VMware VCF Operations

Issue/Introduction
This article provides steps to modify the domain name resolution settings of VMware Aria Operations and VCF Operations 9.0.x appliances. DNS settings are controlled by vApp properties; OS-level changes made to /etc/resolv.conf are overwritten during the appliance boot sequence or service restart.
Environment
- VMware Aria Operations 8.x
- VCF Operations 9.0.x
- VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x
Cause
In VCF 9.0 and later, systemd-resolved enforces the networking configuration defined in the OVF environment/vApp options.
The guest OS treats vApp properties as the authoritative source, causing local configuration files to be discarded.
Resolution
To resolve this issue and ensure persistent DNS settings, update the vApp properties in vCenter:
- Log in to the VMware Aria/VCF Operations admin UI.
- Select Take Cluster Offline and wait for the status to change to Offline.
- Log in to the vSphere Client and locate the appliance VM.
- Perform a graceful shutdown of the Guest OS.
- Take a snapshot of the VM before proceeding.
- Navigate to Configure > Settings > vApp Options.
- Locate the properties for Domain Name Servers, Domain Name, and Domain Search Path.
- Select the property, click Set Value, and enter the correct environment details. (Use commas to separate multiple IP addresses).
- Repeat for all applicable nodes in the cluster.
- Power on the appliance VM(s).
- Log in to the admin UI and select Bring Cluster Online.
- Verify that the VCF Instance inventory (passwords and certificates) renders correctly in the UI.
